How To Up Your COVID-19 Quarantine Shoe Game

by Shannon Scott May 19, 2020

It is a well-known fact to some that a good pair of sneakers can dress up any outfit in style. They can be paired with just about anything! It is no surprise, then, that some of the world's best self-isolated fashionistas are breaking these out of their closets.

Currently, the world is experiencing something that many of us never thought would happen – at least not during our lifetime. The virus formally known as COVID-19, which stands for "CoronaVirus Disease 2019," has become a pandemic, causing shutdowns all over the world. As a result, many people are now being forced to work from home – or, even worse, being laid off as this rapidly spreading virus has led to closures of any businesses deemed non-essential. The struggle of social distancing, and even finding enough toilet paper to make it through the week, has become an issue at the core of everyone’s day-to-day life. It is safe to say that COVID-19 has impacted the daily lives of pretty much everyone, regardless of where you live or what job you have.

Even though the majority of our daily lives has been altered by COVID-19, in one way or another, that does not mean that our fashion choices have to suffer as well. All across the globe, people are having to deal with the desire to look their best, even though they may just be getting ready to sit on the couch with their laptop. For some, this can mean creating a new daily routine while in quarantine. For others, this could be maintaining the routine you had before self-isolation became a thing – who cares if no one is going to see you, besides your dog? And then, there are those who are taking advantage of this time and are opting to go “all-natural." Either way, here are some of the most popular and comfortable shoe styles that you can try out during this quarantine!

I'm pretty sure we are all familiar with slippers, but most of us would never consider wearing them to work. Thanks to the quarantine though, wearing slippers to work is no longer a problem! Another good thing about slippers during the quarantine is the wide variety that is available, so there is pretty much a slipper for everyone out there. Some common slippers are; moccasins, booties, scuff slippers and sandalsAll of these choices are great for anyone during quarantine – not only are they comfortable, they are awfully versatile as well.

Slides, sometimes referred to as sliders, are a type of footwear that can be traced back to ancient Greece. They are open-toed, backless and can range anywhere from high-heeled to flat-footed. They have a strap, or straps, that go across the top of the foot in varying width. Slides derive their name from the fact that you can easily slide them on and off your foot. They are a popular choice of footwear, especially during quarantine, because they are comfortable and easy to wear. Not only that, but they can also look great with sweatpants!

Birkenstock Sandals

Birkenstock sandals have been around since the late 1700s. First gaining popularity amongst “flower” children, Birkenstocks have become known for their back-to-nature philosophy. Similar to slides, Birkenstocks are sandals that are easy to slip on and are comfortable to wear. They are also backless, but differ from other types of sandals in the fact that they have three straps with buckles, or braces of some kind, connecting them across the foot. Although Birkenstocks have been around for hundreds of years, they are becoming an increasingly popular choice during quarantine, due to their laid-back nature and comfortability.

Crocs first gained popularity in the year of 2002, and have since sold more than 300 million pairs worldwide. They are known for their unique style, made of foam and featuring perforations in the shoe that serve as ventilation holes. Since then, countless imitations of the famous Crocs have popped up, due to their innovative nature. Crocs are, once again, gaining in popularity among many different cultures during this time of self-isolation and this is because they are known for their comfortability and are an extremely versatile choice.

Lets face it – it doesn't take a quarantine for us to recognize the value of owning a decent pair of sneakers. While some may decide not to wear them to work, quarantine has made sure that isn’t an issue. It is a well-known fact to some that a good pair of sneakers can dress up any outfit in style. They can be paired with just about anything! It is no surprise, then, that some of the world's best self-isolated fashionistas are breaking these out of their closets. While flashy, multicolored shoes are super cool (and definitely eye-catching), many agree that less is often more – especially in this case. A striking pair of sneakers in a solid color have become a must-have during this quarantine season.

Keep in mind, these are just a few examples of popular shoe styles during this time of quarantine. Not to mention, this is also a great opportunity to try new things, especially while we are all in the comfort of our own homes. The best thing about fashion during quarantine is that we are now able to find things that are not only comfortable, but things that still make us feel good about ourselves, and things we can still wear once things go back to normal. If you would like to try any of these styles and don't have any of them in your closet yet – don’t worry! There is still time to get out there and get yourself a pair! We are sure that you won’t be disappointed; if anything, you will walk away with an awesome new pair of shoes, in comfort and in style. Plus, there is no better time than to support local businesses. We are all in this together!

From Trash to Treasure: Upcycling Materials in Shoe Design

Clothing brands are producing twice the amount of clothes today than they did in 2000. About 15% of raw materials used during production are wasted because of cutouts, and 60% of garments are discarded just a few years after production. On top of that, the energy-intensive production methods, high water and chemical use, and lengthy supply chains intensify the ecological impact of the fashion industry.

In general, our shoes are running closer to an everyday shoe fit vs. an athletic shoe fit and can be worn with or without socks - but the socks have to be eye catching for best results.
